MRCP (for Indian Doctors)

Are you an Indian doctor considering MRCP (UK) as a pathway to grow your career? Here's a complete breakdown of everything you need to know about MRCP, its recognition in India, and how it fits into your future goals.

❓ What is MRCP (UK)?

MRCP stands for Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (UK). It is a globally respected postgraduate qualification in internal medicine. It includes:

  • Part 1 – Written Exam
  • Part 2 – Written Exam
  • PACES (Part 3) – Clinical Skills Assessment

🔹 Can MRCP be registered in India like MD or DNB?

Yes, MRCP is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC) as equivalent to MD in Internal Medicine for specialist practice. While it is not automatically registered as an MD/DNB for government jobs or teaching posts in medical colleges, MRCP holders can register with NMC for specialist practice in the private sector. .

🔹Is MRCP valid in India?

Yes. MRCP is highly respected in India, particularly in the private healthcare sector. Many private hospitals consider MRCP-qualified doctors for internal medicine roles.

🔹 Can Indian doctors work abroad with MRCP?

Yes! Once you complete all three parts of MRCP (including PACES), you become eligible for GMC registration in the UK. This allows you to:

  • Work in NHS hospitals
  • Apply for training or non-training jobs
  • Eventually pursue CCT and become a consultant

🔹 Is CCT necessary for MRCP registration in India?

No. CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training) is only required if you wish to work as a Consultant in the UK. It is not needed for MRCP recognition or practice in India.

🔹 Who should pursue MRCP?

MRCP is ideal for:

  • Doctors who want to work in the UK, Middle East, or internationally
  • Doctors working in India’s private sector looking to stand out
  • MBBS graduates aiming for a globally recognized alternative to MD/DNB

🔹 Can I skip MD or DNB and do MRCP instead?

Yes, you can. If your goal is not tied to Indian government jobs, MRCP is a viable and prestigious alternative.

🔹 What jobs can I get in India with MRCP?

You can work in:

  • Private and corporate hospitals as a specialist
  • International hospital chains operating in India
  • Research and clinical fellowships

❗ Note: Government jobs, teaching posts in MCI-recognized institutions, and academic equivalency still require MD/DNB.

✅ Summary

Is MRCP valid in India?✅ Yes (private sector)

Can I work in UK with MRCP?✅ Yes, after passing all 3 parts

MRCP Program in India

MRCP UK Program In India

Awarded by the Royal College of Physicians UK, MRCP ( Membership of the Royal College of Physicians ) is a Post Graduation Level Qualification in General Medicine. The qualification is awarded to students on completion of the 3 stages of the MRCP Exam. This qualification is approved by the NMC.

In the UK, the MRCP(UK) Examination is usually taken during the period of general professional training in medicine which follows registration with the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom. This qualification is conducted in English throughout. The MRCP(UK) Diploma is recognized as an entry qualification for higher specialist training, the completion of which allows doctors to apply for consultancy posts.

Eligibility: MBBS with 12 months of Internship

Parts:  MRCP has three parts which are as follows:

  • MRCP (UK) Part 1
  • MRCP (UK) Part 2 Written
  • MRCP (UK) Part 2 Clinical (Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills)

MRCP Part 1

  • It is a one day examination
  • Two three-hour papers
  • 100 MCQ (best of 5) per paper
  • Questions do not include images
  • Have to sit in an examination hall
  • Exam Fees is £616  for international students.

MRCP Part 2

  • Two papers taken over one day, each paper lasts 3 hours
  • 100 MCQ (best of 5) per paper
  • Questions include images
  • Have to sit in an examination hall
  • Exam Fees is £616 for international students.

MRCP Part 3

  • Half day exam takes place in a clinical setting (Hospitals/clinical skills centre)
  • 7 core skills are assessed
  • 5 stations
  • 8 patient encounters
  • Exam Fee is £1202

Marking System for Part 1 and Part 2 Written Examination

An “Equating method” is used for calculating a candidate’s overall score. This procedure is statistically based on item response theory and utilized to guarantee equivalent outcomes for candidates in the test for equivalent performance on various diets.

All candidates are given an “overall scaled score” instead of an overall percentage score. The grade is calculated based on the number of questions answered correctly in the two test papers of the exam and takes into account the relative difficulty of the exam.

Note:

  • For every correct response, a +1 mark is awarded.
  • There is no negative marking in the MRCP written exam.
  • If a candidate opts for more than one correct response or the answer is not correctly marked, then the marks awarded to the candidate are zero.

Passing Marks for part 1

As per the last academic session, the qualifying score for MRCP Part 1 exam is 540 marks. You need to get at least these many marks to qualify for MRCP Part 1 and become eligible for the MRCP part 2 written exam.

Passing marks for Part 2

454 marks are considered a qualifying score for part 2. After you have cleared your MRCP part 2, you can proceed toward your MRCP Part 2 Clinical Examinations, i.e., PACES.

Passing marks in PACES

You need to pass each clinical station separately based on clinical standards. Additionally, a minimum of 130 out of 170 is required to pass the PACES.

Highlights:

  •  Students can apply for MRCP without  NEET PG,  PLAB and IELTS.
  •  Completing this course will enable doctors to work in clinical and academic  posts  in India and abroad.

MRCP is not a replacement for MD/DNB in the Indian government system — but it’s a powerful option for doctors targeting private hospitals or an international career.
